One of the best ways to save money on your next automobile is to target fuel-efficient used cars. The benefit is two-fold: not only will you avoid the considerable depreciation that impacts every new car, but you'll also reduce your refueling costs. Heritage | MileOne Autogroup has an outstanding selection of such vehicles, and our know-how can help you select the perfect one.
Which Powertrain is Best?
There's no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. While some powertrains are objectively better from a miles-per-gallon standpoint, we're aware that's not always drivers' first consideration. So let's consider the merits of each.
Internal Combustion Engine (ICE)
Internal combustion engine vehicles are still the most common at our dealerships. Their advantages include plenty of refueling options, a lower purchase cost, and avoiding the "range anxiety" associated with EVs. On the downside, ICE cars typically have higher fuel costs, are less eco-friendly, and have more extensive car maintenance needs due to their larger number of parts and components.
Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)
This powertrain combines an internal combustion engine with a small battery and one or more electric motors. The advantages are lower fuel costs, reduced tailpipe emissions, and higher fuel economy, especially during city driving. Also, an HEV doesn't require external charging of the battery. One con of an HEV is its mechanical complexity and thus the possibility of increased maintenance. Also, while HEVs are more fuel-efficient than ICE cars, they still produce significant emissions compared to more electrified powertrains.
Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)
A PHEV provides a nice balance of electric-only driving for moderate distances - often in the 30 to 50 mile range - and hybrid driving once the battery is depleted. Also, PHEVs can be charged much faster than a full BEV. However, PHEVs usually have a higher sticker price, weigh more, and feature a complex powertrain that could require additional servicing.
Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV)
This powertrain is 100% electric, which means zero tailpipe emissions and significantly lower maintenance costs due to a much smaller number of moving parts relative to the other vehicle types we've discussed. EVs also offer the advantage of instantaneous torque. However, if you buy a BEV from our Baltimore, MD used car dealers, be aware that the driving range is greatly dependent on the power and size of the battery. Also, BEVs usually have a higher initial purchase price. Plus, before you buy, you should confirm that the charging infrastructure in your area can meet your needs.
